How to watermark photos on iPhone
A watermark puts your name on your work. On iPhone you can add one for free with Markup — the hard part is doing it consistently on every photo you send.
Open the photo › Edit › Markup › + › Add Text (or Add Signature), place it in a corner, and tap Done. That's free and built in. For a batch of photos with the same watermark, use an app that applies it on export.
Watermark one photo with Markup (free)
- Open the photo in Photos and tap Edit.
- Tap the Markup (pen) button.
- Tap +, then Add Text. Type your name or company.
- Tap the text to change its color and size, then drag it into a corner.
- Prefer a handwritten mark? Choose Add Signature instead.
- Tap Done.
Photos keeps the edit reversible in your own library (Edit › Revert), but any copy you've already sent keeps the watermark.
The limit is speed and consistency. Each photo is a separate edit, and the text lands in a slightly different place and size every time.
What to put in a work photo watermark
| Line | Why it helps | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Company name | Your name stays on the photo when it's forwarded | Rivera Roofing LLC |
| Date and time | Shows when the work was documented | 11/07/2026, 09:14 |
| Project | Ties the photo to the right job | Smith Kitchen |
| Photo number | Lets you refer to "photo 12" in a report or call | No.0012 |
| License number | Required or expected in some trades | Lic. #123456 |
Two or three lines is usually enough. More than that starts to cover the work you're trying to show.
Watermark a batch of photos
When you send twenty photos from a job, you want the same watermark on all twenty without opening each one. In Shotfile, the watermark is a setting rather than an edit:
- Open Settings › Watermark and turn it on.
- Pick the built-in lines you want — time, location, project name, photo number.
- Add your own lines, such as your company name or license number.
- Choose the corner and the background opacity.
- Select any number of photos and share, export or make a PDF report. Every copy gets the same watermark.

Rivera Roofing LLC · Lic. #123456
The originals inside the app stay clean, so you can turn the watermark off and send unmarked copies any time. Scanned documents can be stamped too — every page gets the same lines.

Download on the App StoreTips for a watermark that doesn't get in the way
- Use a corner. Bottom left is the usual choice — it rarely covers the subject.
- Use a soft background. White text on a semi-transparent dark box stays readable on both bright sky and dark interiors.
- Keep it the same every time. Consistent placement looks professional and makes photos easy to compare.
- Keep an unmarked original. Some clients or insurers want the original file too.
FAQ
Can I watermark photos on iPhone for free?
Yes. Open the photo, tap Edit, then Markup, and add text or your signature. It's free and built in, but you have to do each photo by hand.
Can I remove a Markup watermark later?
Yes, in your own library. Photos keeps edits reversible, so Edit › Revert removes it. Copies you already sent keep the watermark.
What should a work photo watermark include?
Usually your company name, and often the date, project name and a photo number. Some trades add a license number. Keep it to two or three short lines in a corner so it doesn't hide the work.
